Legacy Project
HIV Edmonton began in 1984 as the AIDS Network of Edmonton, led by Michael Phair and a group of concerned friends that gathered around his kitchen table to discuss the first public case of AIDS in Edmonton. The AIDS Network of Edmonton was incorporated on February 12, 1986. In July, 1999 the society changed its name to the HIV Network of Edmonton Society.
HIV Edmonton announced the kick-off of the Legacy Project at an event November 19, 2009 at the Fairmont Hotel MacDonald. The event celebrated the accomplishments of Michael Phair and those that joined him around his kitchen table in 1984 to embark upon a journey of hope. HIV Edmonton plans to honor the work of those champions as we reflect on 25 years of providing support, education and advocacy for those infected with, affected by, or at risk of HIV.
The Legacy Project is a 15-month campaign, comprised of six (6) components, culminating with a gala in 2011 to commemorate when the agency was incorporated.
The Legacy Garden
HIV Edmonton will create a permanent monument to honor the legacy of the AIDS Movement in Edmonton. The agency will apply for a public art grant in May 2011 and will be soliciting donors to create this community garden. Groundbreaking Event to be announced Summer, 2010.
“25 Years of AIDS in Edmonton”
HIV Edmonton is developing a coffee table book to commemorate the champions of the HIV/AIDS movement in Edmonton. CBC Edmonton producer, Leslie Goldstone, will write these compelling stories. Graphic designers, Plumbheavy Design (www.plumbheavy.ca) and photographers Roth & Ramberg (www.rothandramberg.com) have generously donated their services to make this project possible. Book will be available for purchase December 1, World AIDS Day 2010.
