This year marks the 16th anniversary for the Laurel Awards, which were established by Duncan & Craig LLP in 1994 to honour the law firm's centennial.
There were 28 cultural, athletic and social welfare groups shortlisted for the award this year. Zebra Child Protection Centre was named the Gold Recipient and YESS was named the Silver Recipient.
HIV Edmonton was named the Bronze Recipient for the Bodymapping Program, a form of art and narrative therapy used to gain understanding of one’s personal journey of living with HIV. HIV Edmonton was presented with the bronze medal and a cheque for $1,000 at the luncheon on September 13, 2010.
In his remarks, Alberta’s new lieutenant-governor, Donald Ethell praised the nominees for their courage to question the status quo and champion innovation. "You have the ability to see past the apathy and the assumptions in order to see a different way of doing things," said Ethell.

Recognition as Organization by John Humphrey Centre for Peace and Human Rights
On November 25, 2009, in partnership with Rights and Democracy, the John Humphrey Centre for Peace and Human Rights announced that HIV Edmonton has won the Human Rights Award for Excellence in the Organization Category. The 3rd Annual Human Rights Awards was held at City Hall to celebrate the everyday heroes in Edmonton who have worked to advance human rights and have helped Edmonton on the road to becoming a Human Rights City.
The Human Rights Awards recognizes International Human Rights Day, December 10, 2009, as an opportunity to celebrate the people and organizations of Edmonton who have dedicated themselves to making our city a better place to live for all.
The 2009 Human Rights Awards Ceremony featured a keynote speaker from La'Onf (No Violence), an Iraqi Human Rights Organization and winner of the Rights & Democracys John Humphrey Freedom Award for 2009, presented for exceptional achievement in the promotion of human rights and democratic development. It is named for John Peters Humphrey, a Canadian lawyer and the principal drafter of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
"We are so grateful to John Humphrey Centre for Peace and Human Rights and the nomination committee for the Award of Excellence" said Debra Jakubec, HIV Edmonton Executive Director. "For the work of our board, staff and volunteers in advocacy and advancement of human rights to be recognized is truly an honor."
