The World AIDS Campaign is a global coalition united by the call for governments to honour their AIDS commitments under the slogan “Getting to Zero.” Backed by the United Nations, the “Getting to Zero” campaign runs until 2015 as part of UNAIDS commitment to eliminate new HIV infections among children by 2015.
For the third consecutive year, HIV Edmonton has partnered with Starbucks to commemorate World AIDS Day locally and distribute red ribbons. The red ribbon is worn in memory of those who have died of an AIDS related illness and is a symbol of the need for an end to this pandemic.
In partnership with Starbucks, Edmontonians can get a red ribbon at any Edmonton Starbucks location. Personalities from various media outlets will participate in the “3rd Annual Starbucks Celebrity Baristas” promotion. 2011 set a record for the “Celebrity Barista” promotion with eleven (11) local media personalities stepping up the plate and donating their time. Red ribbons will also be distributed to City Hall and local media outlets.

Also on World AIDS Day, after 30 years of HIV and AIDS, people living with HIV in Edmonton would like to honour their former HIV positive mentors at an event titled “Angels Amongst Us”. Due to the efforts of these mentors, support and health services now provide realistic, informed and relevant services to the HIV positive population today. These mentors inspire us to continue to carry the torch of activism forward. “Angels Amongst Us” will be an evening of entertainment and reflection.
