Gay/Bisexual Men & HIV Social Marketing Campaigns

In 2003, AIDS Vancouver invited HIV Edmonton and organizations from five other Canadian cities to partner in Canada's first ever national social marketing campaign focusing on gay/bisexual/MSM and HIV/AIDS.  The organizations involved include; AIDS Vancouver, Community Based Research Centre in Vancouver, British Columbia Persons Living With AIDS, HIV Edmonton, Nine Circles of Winnipeg, ACToronto, Action Sero Zero & AIDS Community Care of Montreal,  AIDS Coalition of Nova Scotia in Halifax; and the Canadian AIDS Society.

The first campaign, released in 2004 was imported from San Francisco and was called "How do you know what you know" or "The Assumptions Campaign".  The campaign was produced on billboards, bus shelters, posters, post cards and bathroom ads in Halifax, Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg, Edmonton and Vancouver.  Provinces where additional funds were secured, the campaign was expanded to other smaller cities.  The goal of the campaign was to prompt gay/bisexual/MSM men to check the assumptions they make about their sexual partners and featured men presumably engaged in anal intercourse.  Click think-again.ca to go to the website.

The second campaign, launched in 2006 was designed to celebrate the large percentage of gay/bisexual/MSM who were testing negative for HIV.  The campaign was designed around playful names gay/bi/MSM call their penises and featured materials with "crotch" photos of a variety of below the belt shots and a series of materials with several hundred names.  The campaign, known as Gay Men Play Safe employed billboards, bus shelters, street ads, bicycle racks, posters, post cards and bathroom ads in the same cities as the 2004 campaign.   An online feature of this campaign was a viral video that was designed to share with online friends and colleagues.  Click gaymenplaysafe.com. to go to the website

A third campaign is being designed for release through the summer and fall of 2008.  For this campaign, the National Advisory Committee welcomes the AIDS Comittee of Ottawa, AIDS Calgary as well as the Rainbow Resource Centre of Winnipeg as new partners.   The NAC is also negotiating a national busiiness partner who will be active in the dissemination of our campaign across Canada.  Come back for regular updates on the progress of the campaign as well as firm launching dates for the various cities across Canada.
