HIV 101 & CO-INFECTION

Duration: 1 – 1.5 hrs

An overview of HIV including:

  • What is HIV? What is AIDS?
  • How does it affect your body?
  • How is it transmitted?
  • How can you prevent transmission?
  • What is HIV HCV Co-infection and what does that mean for your health?

 

THINK POSITIVE, TEST NEGATIVE

Duration: 1 hr 15 min

Target audience: youth

In this presentation we provide basic information on HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis C and present youth with options on reducing & eliminating behaviors that put you at risk. We aim to decrease stigma and discrimination surrounding these infections and promote harm reduction, health promotion and prevention in a non-judgemental way. This presentation was developed by the University of Alberta Students International Health Association (SIHA).

 

HIV EDUCATION FOR YOUNG AUDIENCES

Duration: 45 minutes

Target audience: Grade 6 and can be tailored for younger audiences. This presentation provides basic information about HIV/AIDS in a way that young people can understand. We focus on how HIV is contracted and prevented, myths surrounding the illness and treating yourself and others with respect.

 

HIV VIRAL REPLICATION CYCLE & TREATMENT

Duration: 1 hr

A look at how HIV operates in your body and how viral replication takes place. We will also take a brief look at HAART for HIV and what some of the most common side effects may be for someone receiving HAART. This presentation was developed by the Canadian AIDS Treatment Information Exchange (CATIE)

 

HARM REDUCTION

Duration: 1hr

An introductory look at the philosophy of harm reduction. We’ll talk about why it is an important strategy related to HIV prevention, discuss misconceptions around what harm reduction is and how all of us might better implement harm reduction strategies into our work, our communities and our daily lives.

 

POSITIVE SPEAKER

Duration: 30 minutes

Trained volunteers provide information on the physical, emotional and psychological effects of HIV/AIDS.

 

DETERMINANTS OF HEALTH

Duration: 1.5 hrs

HIV/AIDS in Alberta and Canada stats, how to use a population health approach to understand vulnerability to HIV

 

HUMAN RIGHTS, STIGMA, & THE LAW

Duration: 1 hr

How human rights affect people living with HIV, stigma and discrimination, criminalization of HIV

 

NEWLY DIAGNOSED

Duration: 1 hour

This workshop explores the different questions that a newly diagnosed individual might ask, and how best to respond. Participants will draw on their own expertise and experience in order to come up with answers to these potentially difficult questions. This presentation was developed by the Canadian AIDS Treatment Information Exchange (CATIE).

 

BEHIND THE PANDEMIC

Duration: 3 hrs

A discussion of vulnerability, impact, and risk as it relates to HIV and a simulation activity that uses a population health approach to understanding HIV on both local and global levels. Participants are invited to conclude the day by sharing ideas of actions they can take to help address HIV/AIDS in their local and global communities. This presentation was developed by the International Coalition on AIDS and Development.

 

TRIPLE THREAT

Duration: 1 full day or 2 half days.

This workshop explores several topics surrounding HIV/AIDS in an interactive format, including sexually transmitted infections, hepatitis c, sexuality, harm reduction and drug use, stigma and discrimination, with a focus on HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis C.

 

DYNAMICS OF HIV/AIDS

Duration: 2 days

This workshop covers a number of our individual workshops in the span of two days: HIV 101 and co-infection, HIV Viral Replication Cycle and Treatment, Positive Story, Determinants of Health, Human Rights, Stigma and the law, and Behind the Pandemic.

 

BEYOND THE BANANA: BIOLOGY OF HIV TRANSMISSION

Duration: One day or two half-days

This workshop is designed for front-line HIV/AIDS workers to provide accessible information about recent research, in order to better inform counseling and educational messages about the biology of HIV transmission.  Topics of the workshop include: HAART as an aid to prevention; the immune system and HIV transmission; STIs and increased risk of HIV transmission; the female genital tract; and circumcision as a prevention method.  This workshop was developed by the Canadian AIDS Treatment Information Exchange (CATIE)

 

PHENIX COURSE

Duration: 8 weeks, one 3-hour session per week

The Phenix Course is an exploration of queer sexuality. Over the course of 8 sessions participants will examine various aspects of mental and physical eroticism and explore their sexual and sensual psyches. The course features in-depth sessions on sexual techniques, exploring the body, drugs, masculinity, and contemporary issues of HIV and sexual risk taking…plus much more. Phenix is a great opportunity for gay, bisexual and queer men to come together and talk the erotic.
