Syphilis awareness campaign scratched by health minister

(Edmonton Journal, August 15, 2008)

Health Minister Ron Liepert says he will not support a provincewide syphilis awareness campaign that might not reach the highest-risk Albertans who "have to take more responsibility" for their own personal health.

"You have to remember that 95 per cent of Albertans are not impacted by (syphilis). I'm not necessarily going to subscribe to a provincewide ad campaign that could be communicating more to senior citizens than it is to street workers," Liepert said Thursday, after announcing a $36.5-million injection for the Mazankowski Heart Institute.  "Doesn't it make more sense to have a focused campaign, which we're currently undertaking, to address those in the high-risk category, than the 95 per cent who are not?"

Canada: Fewer Teens Report Having Intercourse

(Canadian Press, August 20, 2008)

TORONTO - Fewer Canadian teens are reporting having sexual intercourse, and the decline appears to be greater among young women than young men, according to a new study.

In 2005, 43 per cent of teens aged 15 to 19 reported having intercourse at least once, compared to 47 per cent in 1996-1997, Statistics Canada said Wednesday.

The study found that the decline was due to young women, where the proportion who reported having had intercourse decreased from 51 per cent to 43 per cent.  Meanwhile, the proportion of young men who reported having intercourse remained the same at 43 per cent.

Clement blasted for Insite comments

(Edmonton Journal, August 19, 2008)

MONTREAL - The director of a Vancouver non-profit group that helps people with mental illness and addictions dismissed federal Health Minister Tony Clement's comments about Vancouver's safe-injection site as "embarrassing" Monday.

"Addiction is a really serious problem that matters to Canadians," said Mark Townsend, director of the Portland Hotel Society. "A mature leader should take advice from people who know what's going on."

Earlier Monday, Clement assailed the Canadian Medical Association for supporting the supervised drug-injection site called Insite, arguing that allowing heroin addicts to shoot up is against a health professional's code of ethics.

HIV/AIDS Groups Express Concern About Potential for New Antiretroviral Advertising To 'Scare Off' Patients

(Kaiser Daily HIV/AIDS Report, August 25, 2008)

The Wall Street Journal on Monday examined a new trend for drugmakers marketing HIV/AIDS treatments to release ads that "tak[e] aim at rival HIV drugs, hinting at side effects and other drawbacks." Drug companies have "traditionally sold" antiretrovirals "with images of hope and by explaining the benefits of their treatments" and the "tough new tack has some patient groups unsettled, saying it could scare off patients," according to the Journal.

A recent GlaxoSmithKline ad shows shark-infested waters with the message: "Don't take a chance -- stick with the HIV medicine that's working for you." According to the Journal, another GSK ad in the monthly magazine Poz promotes the drugmaker's protease inhibitor Lexiva and advises patients to ask their physicians, "Will the HIV medicine make my skin or eyes turn yellow?" Other protease inhibitors have been associated with such a side effect, the Journal reports.

The AIDS Healthcare Foundation sent a letter to HHS last month expressing concerns about GSK's ads. The organization said it has not yet received a response, but a spokesperson for HHS said it has not received the letter. In addition, Bob Huff, antiretroviral project director at Treatment Action Group, said he complained to GSK about the shark-themed ad. Huff said the ad is offensive and intended to create fear among HIV-positive people.

Sydney plans homophobia-free zones

(Edmonton Journal, August 25, 2008)

SYDNEY - Australia's gay capital Sydney is set to try and enforce homophobia-free zones which may see clubs and hotels lose their licences if patrons commit homophobic abuse or violence, local media said Sunday.

The move will focus on the city's main gay precinct, Oxford Street, site of the world's biggest gay and lesbian Mardi Gras each year, and other areas deemed gay and lesbian precincts.

Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the move recognized the "essential gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender character of Oxford Street" and was a response to gay men who had written to her about homophobic abuse at nightclubs, said news.com.au.

Zeroing in on side effects

(CATIE News)

In 1996, the once inevitable tide of AIDS began to retreat with the release of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). For the first time, AIDS-related infections and deaths began to decrease, at least in high-income countries.

In the initial euphoria that greeted the arrival of HAART, little thought was given to the possible side effects. Certainly, no one foretold the strange and disturbing constellation of problems that would later occur, such as:

  • the disappearance of subcutaneous fat (the fatty layer just under the skin) in the legs, arms and face
  • the buildup of a pad of fat at the base of the neck and shoulders (buffalo hump)
  • increased fat in the belly and breasts (of women)
  • increased levels of lipids (fatty substances) in the blood—so-called bad cholesterol (LDL-C) and triglycerides
  • increased concentrations of sugar (glucose) and the hormone insulin in the blood
  • decreased levels of so-called good cholesterol (HDL-C) in the blood
