The Board of Directors and Staff of HIV Edmonton would like to take this opportunity to wish one and all a Memorable and Happy Holiday Season.  Take a few moments in the coming weeks to reflect on the hardships that many face at this time of year and what you can do to make one hour of their lives a little less difficult.  Reflect also on your own good fortune.  Take time to absorb the love around you and to give time and attention to those you love.  This is the season of sharing and no matter how little you have, a smile, an act of kindness or a simple acknowledgement; please share it with someone in need. Please note that the HIV Edmonton offices will be closed from Monday, December 24th to Wednesday, January 2nd.

The Stigma Project Final Report

The Influence of Stigma on Access to Health Services by Persons with HIV Illness     This report presents findings from the CIHR-funded research project titled: The Influence of Stigma on Access to Health Services by Persons with HIV Illness. The purpose of this report is to present an overview of the key findings from the project and the strategies (current and planned) to disseminate the findings. A more in-depth discussion of the study findings will be presented in the published papers that are currently being written. The purpose of this research was to develop an intervention for the provision of health services to persons living with HIV that mitigated the impact of stigma and optimized access to appropriate health care. The objectives of the research were to: explore the practices in health care organizations that persons living with HIV perceived to be stigmatizing; develop an optimal design for health service delivery to eliminate stigmatizing practices; and describe the process required to reorient health services to incorporate the optimal design.

CAAN Looking for Research Participants

Two Spirit Women’s Experience of Homophobia in the Context of HIV/AIDS Service Provision: a project of the Canadian Aboriginal AIDS Network, with funding from CIHR, HIV/AIDS Community-Based Research Program    The Canadian Aboriginal AIDS Network (CAAN) has commenced a three year research project with funding support from Canadian Institutes of Health Research, HIV/AIDS Community-Based Research Program.  The purpose of this study is to better understand the service provision needs of two spirit women in the context of HIV/AIDS and their experiences of homophobia and/or transphobia. This project was inspired by CAAN’s 2005 research report, which illuminated the fact that two-spirit women have experienced homophobia in health care settings. Little is known about these experiences and so the study will seek out individuals who self-identify as two-spirit women, lesbian, queer, bisexual, and male-to-female transgender and gather their stories. For more information or to participate, please contact Robert at (780)488-5742, ext 230, email: robert.s@hivedmonton.com OR Jann at CAAN (888)285-2226, ext 107, email: jannt@caan.ca (all calls confidential)

First-Line Triple-Combination Antiretroviral Therapy

First-Line Triple-Combination Antiretroviral Therapy Provides Long-Term Protection Against AIDS-Related Illnesses, Study Says
(Kaiser Daily HIV/AIDS Report)    First-line triple-combination antiretroviral therapy provides long-term protection against AIDS-related illnesses, according to a study published Friday in the Lancet, AFP/Google.com reports. The three first-line classes of antiretrovirals are nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors, non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors and protease inhibitors.
For the study, Andrew Phillips of the Royal Free and University College Medical School and colleagues followed 7,916 HIV-positive people living in the United Kingdom who began standard triple-combination therapy.

AIDS Rising Again

(James Driscoll - Washington Times)    Overlooked in the presidential campaign rhetoric about health care access, AIDS continues to ravage disadvantaged Americans and is again increasing within the homosexual community.  For years, while rates of many sexually transmitted diseases have soared, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates of new HIV cases remained stable at 40,000 a year. AIDS fighters in cities like Washington told a different story. The CDC estimates, they warn, fail to reflect the rapid spread of HIV in minority communities. Vindicating their warnings, the CDC will soon announce updated HIV infection rates that are disturbingly higher than previous estimates.
