CAAN Looking for Research Participants
Two Spirit Women’s Experience of Homophobia in the
Context of HIV/AIDS Service Provision: a project of the Canadian
Aboriginal AIDS Network, with funding from CIHR, HIV/AIDS
Community-Based Research Program The Canadian Aboriginal AIDS
Network (CAAN) has commenced a three year research project with
funding support from Canadian Institutes of Health Research,
HIV/AIDS Community-Based Research Program. The purpose of this study
is to better understand the service provision needs of two spirit
women in the context of HIV/AIDS and their experiences of homophobia
and/or transphobia. This project was inspired by CAAN’s 2005
research report, which illuminated the fact that two-spirit women
have experienced homophobia in health care settings. Little is known
about these experiences and so the study will seek out individuals
who self-identify as two-spirit women, lesbian, queer, bisexual, and
male-to-female transgender and gather their stories. For more
information or to participate, please contact Robert at
(780)488-5742, ext 230, email: robert.s@hivedmonton.com
OR Jann at CAAN (888)285-2226, ext 107, email: jannt@caan.ca (all calls
confidential)

Washington, D.C.,
To Invest $650,000 in Needle-Exchange Programs
(Kaiser Daily HIV/AIDS
Update) Washington, D.C., plans to
invest $650,000 in needle-exchange programs to help prevent the
spread of HIV among injection drug users in the city, officials
announced Wednesday, the Washington Post reports (Nakamura,
Washington Post, 1/3). The announcement comes after
President Bush last week signed a $555 billion fiscal year 2008
omnibus spending bill (HR 2764) that effectively lifts a ban on city funding for needle-exchange programs in
the district. Since 1999, the district has been the only U.S. city
barred by federal law from using local funds for needle-exchange
programs.
