Canadian HIV/AIDS
Information Center Closing(Notice from
CPHA) We regret to inform
you that the Canadian HIV/AIDS Information Centre, a program of the
Canadian Public Health Association (CPHA), will cease operations
effective March 31, 2008. In September 2006, the
HIV/AIDS Policy, Coordination and Programs Division of the Public
Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) released a request for proposals for
a new National HIV/AIDS Knowledge Exchange Fund that called for a
single 'knowledge exchange broker' to be funded to support
Canadians' HIV/AIDS information needs at the national level. In late
2007, PHAC notified CPHA that its proposal for the Canadian HIV/AIDS
Information Centre to take on that knowledge exchange role was not
successful, and as a result CPHA will gradually wind down the
Information Centre's operations until closing at the end of March.

Positive Spaces
Healthy PlacesOver the past three years a partnership
was developed between community-based AIDS service organizations
(ASOs) and researchers from York and McMaster Universities to study
the housing needs of people living with HIV/AIDS (PHAs) as they
relate to health and well-being. This partnership first
convened at the Ontario AIDS Network annual retreat for Executive
Directors in 2002, when a provincial sub-committee was formed to
look at the issues facing PHAs directly related to housing.
The partnership identified that housing may be the greatest unmet
need among PHAs and that specific housing supports to ensure safety,
health and dignity, varied among PHAs. It was also recognized that
there was an overall lack of research in the area, particularly in
Canada; and this lack of information was seen as a barrier to the
adequate understanding of the current situation in Ontario and
ability to plan for the future. Click

on their website shortly)

Government
Attorneys Drop Charges Against Canadian Doctor in Tainted Blood
Case(Kaiser Daily HIV/AIDS
Report) Canadian government attorneys on
Friday dropped all remaining charges related to blood products
contaminated with HIV and hepatitis C against Roger Perrault, former
director of the blood transfusion service of the Canadian Red Cross, the CP/Toronto Star reports (Bonnell,
CP/Toronto Star, 1/19). John Pearson, prosecutor from
the Ontario Supreme Court, withdrew all six remaining charges
against Perrault because Pearson said there is no longer a
"reasonable prospect of conviction" (Noronha, AP/Google.com, 1/18).

Linking MRSA to
Gay Men Casts Unfair and Familiar Stigma(Kaiser
Daily HIV/AIDS Report) Gay rights
advocates and opponents recently responded to research that links a
drug-resistant strain of methicillin-resistant staphylococcus
aureus, or MRSA, to men who have sex with men in Boston and San
Francisco, the New York Times reports. The study was
published online recently in the journal Annals of Internal
Medicine, the Times reports (McKinley, New
York Times, 1/20).
According to the
Times, the study "seemed to cast an unfair, and all too
familiar, stigma" on MSM and "inadvertently offered ammunition" for
gay rights opponents, including Concerned Women for America and Americans for Truth About Homosexuality. CWA on
Wednesday issued a release that said the "sexual deviancy" of MSM
has led to HIV/AIDS, syphilis and gonorrhea. The group added that
the "medical community has known for years that homosexual conduct,
especially among males, creates a breeding ground for often deadly
diseases."

Number of HIV
Cases Among Elderly in Puerto Rico Increasing(Kaiser
Daily HIV/AIDS Report) The number of new
HIV cases recorded among people ages 60 and older in Puerto Rico is
increasing, the Miami Herald reports. According to the
Herald, 238 new HIV cases were recorded among people
over age 60 during the year ending in September 2007 -- a 25%
increase compared with the same time period in 2006. Puerto Rico
Health Secretary Rosa Perez Perdomo said that about 4% of all HIV
cases in the country occur among the age group. The national average
of new HIV cases reported among people ages 65 and older has
remained at about 2% annually, according to CDC figures.
