Many People Who Know, Trust Sex Partners Assume Low Risk of HIV, Other STIs
(Kaiser Daily HIV/AIDS Report) Many people who know their sexual partners well consider themselves to be at a low risk of sexually transmitted infections, including HIV, according to a study published in the June issue of Sexually Transmitted Diseases, Reuters reports.
For the study, Cindy Masaro of the University of British Columbia and colleagues distributed questionnaires to 317 men and women who were attending an STI clinic for the first time and had not yet been diagnosed with an STI. The questionnaire asked whether people could be "pretty sure" a sex partner was "safe" in certain circumstances, such as if they knew the partner well, knew the partner's friends or believed they could trust the partner.

According to the study -- which included 3,500 MSM -- participants who knew that they were HIV-positive were statistically more likely to have unprotected sex than those who did not know or were HIV-negative. HIV Diagnoses Among MSM Ages 13-24 Increased by 12% Annually From 2001 to 2006,
(Kaiser Daily HIV/AIDS Report) The number of new HIV diagnoses recorded between 2001 and 2006 among men who have sex with men ages 13 to 24 increased by 12.4% annually, according to a study published Thursday in CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, the New York Times reports. Some experts said the findings are an "ominous ... indicator" that the HIV/AIDS epidemic continues to flourish among MSM, the Times reports. For the study, CDC analyzed data from 33 states but did not include statistics from states with large minority and MSM populations, including California, Illinois and Georgia (Tuller, New York Times, 6/27). The study found that of the 214,379 HIV diagnoses recorded during the study period, 46% were among MSM.

NYC Urges Docs To Do Routine HIV Testing On Adults
(CBS News) Health officials are trying to persuade doctors to offer HIV tests to nearly every patient in a New York City community hit harder than most by AIDS. Under a new program announced Thursday, officials have set an ambitious goal of testing a quarter million adults in the Bronx, one of five boroughs that make up New York City, within three years. "We need every single individual to know their status," said Dr. Monica Sweeney, an assistant health commissioner who specializes in HIV prevention. Like dozens of other states, New York now requires doctors to obtain a patient's written consent and provide a brief counseling session before giving them a test for the AIDS virus, a process that can take up to 20 minutes. That's enough to deter doctors and nurses from suggesting HIV tests to patients routinely, according to the city.

New TB Test That Quickly Diagnoses MDR-TB
(Kaiser Daily HIV/AIDS Report) The World Health Organization, Stop TB Partnership, UNITAID and the Foundation for Innovative New Diagnostics on Monday announced a joint project to distribute a new diagnostic test for multi-drug resistant tuberculosis that can produce results in two days instead of the standard two or three months, the New York Times reports. Difficulty in identifying MDR-TB has been a "major obstacle" in controlling TB because many patients die or spread the disease while waiting for test results, the Times reports.
