Study Reports HIV Prevalence Among Vancouver Sex Workers, IDUs, MSM

A recent study conducted by the British Columbia Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS found that 26% of Vancouver's up to 520 female commercial sex workers and 17% of the city's injection drug users are HIV-positive, the Vancouver Sun reports.

HIV's Mutations To Avoid Immune Defenses Can Be Passed to Wider Population, Study Says
(Kaiser Daily HIV and AIDS - February 26, 2009)
HIV can adapt rapidly to evade immune system responses, and these mutations can be passed on in the wider population, according to a study published Thursday in the journal Nature, Reuters reports. Although researchers have known that HIV constantly mutates within an individual person, the new study indicates that these mutations that help the virus attack immune cells are increasingly passed to large groups in the population.

Illinois Law Requiring Officials To Report Identities of HIV-Positive Students Could Be Amended

A lawmaker in Illinois has proposed a bill (H.B. 0154) to amend a current statute that requires state or local health officials to report the names of HIV-positive students to school principals, the Daily Journal reports.

Colo. Senate Passes Bill Requiring HIV Testing for Pregnant Women

The Colorado Senate on Wednesday approved a bill (S.B. 179) requiring HIV testing for pregnant women to prevent mother-to-child-transmission of the virus, the Colorado Springs Gazette reports.

Increasing Risk of HIV Among Older People, Doctors Failing To Diagnose Cases in Population, WHO Study Says

People ages 50 and older are more likely to have unprotected sex than younger groups, increasing their risk for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections, according to a recently released World Health Organization study, Reuters UK reports.

Global Fund Mission Considering Restoration of Grants to Myanmar's HIV/AIDS, TB, Malaria Programs
(Kaiser Daily HIV and AIDS - March 2, 2009)
A four-member mission of the Global Fund To Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria last week visited Myanmar to meet with local officials and discuss the possibility of restoring funds to programs that address the three diseases in the country, Xinhuanet reports. The delegation -- led by William Paton, director of the Global Fund's country programs -- spent four days in Myanmar at the invitation of the country's government and held discussions with the Myanmar Country Coordinating Mechanism, led by the country's health minister.
