HIV Cases Among Young People in Iowa Increasing

Health officials announced recently that the number of newly recorded HIV cases among Iowans ages 15 to 24 increased by 45% in 2008 to 16, despite the widespread availability of condoms and other prevention methods, the Iowa Press-Citizen reports.

HIV/AIDS Advocates Express Concern About Obama's Continuation of Needle-Exchange Funding Ban

Although President Obama previously has expressed support for needle-exchange programs as part of HIV/AIDS prevention efforts, advocates recently expressed concern that the administration's 2009-2010 budget proposal intends to continue a funding ban for such programs that dates back to the 1980s, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Researchers Develop Vaccine Candidate That Is Successful in Blocking Simian Version of HIV

Researchers have successfully blocked SIV, the simian version of HIV, using a new technique that could help lead to the development of an effective HIV/AIDS vaccine, the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

HIV Cases Increasing in Britain, UNICEF Report Says

Recent figures from UNICEF indicate that Britain recorded 7,734 new HIV cases in 2007 -- almost twice the number of cases recorded around 2000 -- London's Metro reports.

Study Shows Decreased Risk of Death From Opportunistic Infections With Earlier Antiretroviral Treatment

HIV-positive people with opportunistic infections who receive earlier antiretroviral treatment lower their risk of death compared with people who delay treatment, according to a new study conducted by the Stanford University School of Medicine and published in PLoS One, the San Jose Mercury News reports.

Australia Harm Reduction Strategies Serve as Model for Other Countries, UNAIDS Official Says

The Australian government's efforts to curb the spread of HIV by advocating harm-reduction initiatives, such as needle-exchange programs and drug substitution therapy, for injection drug users serve as a model for other countries throughout the region, UNAIDS Asia Pacific Director Prasada Rao said recently, the AAP/Sydney Morning Herald reports.

Scientists Receive Grant To Develop Hand-Held Self-Monitoring Test for HIV Viral Loads

Scientists in the United Kingdom have received a grant worth two million euros, or about $2.67 million, to develop a self-monitoring system for HIV-positive people that measures viral loads through a finger-prick of blood, BBC News reports.
