Canadian Court To Determine Constitutionality of Law Preventing Supervised Drug-Injection Sites

The British Columbia Court of Appeals this week is hearing a case to decide whether certain sections of Canada's Controlled Drugs and Substances Act that prevent injection drug users from accessing services at the supervised drug-injection facility Insite in Vancouver, British Columbia, are constitutional, Toronto's Globe and Mail reports (Stueck, Globe and Mail, 4/28).

Canadian Premier Pledges Funding for Pilot Program To Increase HIV Treatment Access, Prevent New Cases

Canadian Premier Gordon Campbell during the recent 18th Annual Canadian Conference on HIV/AIDS Research pledged to commit up to 20 million Canadian dollars -- or about $16.1 million -- annually to a five-year pilot program in Prince George and Vancouver, the Victoria Times Colonist reports.

Use of Certain Antibiotics in Topical Cream Could Prevent HIV Transmission, Study Says

A class of antibiotics known as aminoglycosides could be used to make a topical cream that would trigger production of a protein in humans to prevent HIV transmission, according to a study published Tuesday in PLoS Biology, the Orlando Sentinel reports.

Scotland Records More Than 100 New HIV Cases During First Three Months of 2009

More than 100 new HIV cases were reported in Scotland between January and March, bringing the total number of cases recorded to date to 5,901, according to a recently released report from Health Protection Scotland, the PA/Press and Journal reports.

Advocates Express Concern Over Brazilian State's Proposed Law Requiring Identification of HIV-Positive People

Recent draft legislation that would require the state government in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to publish an online list of HIV-positive people has spurred concern among some HIV/AIDS advocates in the country, who contend that such action could be detrimental and discriminatory, London's Guardian reports.

World Bank HIV/AIDS Programs Less Effective Than Its Other Health Programs, Report Finds

World Bank programs aimed at fighting HIV/AIDS, particularly in Africa, are less effective overall than World Bank programs aimed at addressing other health and development issues, according to a report released Thursday by the organization's Independent Evaluation Group, the New York Times reports.

HIV-Positive People at Increased Risk of New Flu Strain, WHO Says

HIV-positive people worldwide are at an increased risk of the H1N1 flu strain, the World Health Organization said on Saturday in guidelines for health workers published on its Web site, Reuters India reports.
