Alberta –
hepatitis B vaccine fails despite many
attempts(CATIE News) HIV
and hepatitis B virus (HBV) can be spread through sharing
contaminated substance-use equipment and engaging in unprotected
sex. Not surprisingly, some HIV positive people are also co-infected
with HBV. HIV infection weakens the immune system and
increases vulnerability to infections and their complications. So
HIV positive people co-infected with HBV are at increased risk for
liver-related damage and liver cancer. In caring for people
with HIV/AIDS (PHAs), doctors usually assess their patients’
exposure and immunity to HBV. If a PHA is not infected with HBV and
does not have any detectable immunity to this virus, infectious
disease specialists recommend vaccinating PHAs to protect them from
HBV.

Atripla approved
in Canada(CATIE News) On
October 16, Health Canada approved the use and sale of the anti-HIV
medication Atripla. What makes this product unique is that it
contains three anti-HIV medicines in one pill that is taken only
once daily. Atripla contains the following medicines:
* efavirenz (Sustiva) – 600 mg * FTC
(emtricitabine, Emtriva) – 200 mg * tenofovir (Viread) – 300
mg
The co-formulation of these three medicines
in one tablet provides a simple, easy to take, yet potent treatment
for HIV infection.

International
study examines cervical health in HIV positive women
(CATIE
News) Infection with the sexually
transmitted HPV (human papilloma virus) is linked to the development
of warts on the anus and genitals, abnormal growths on the cervix
and vulva, and anal and cervical cancer. Since HIV is most
commonly transmitted through unprotected sex, co-infection with
other sexually transmitted microbes, such as HPV, is common in HIV
positive people. Because HIV weakens the immune system, women with
HIV are at increased risk for the following:
* persistent HPV infection * the
presence of abnormal cells on the cervix, vulva and
anus
What’s more, some of these abnormal cells
could become precancerous or even form tumours.

Moderate HIV Viral
Loads More Infectious(Kaiser Daily HIV/AIDS
Reports) People with moderate HIV viral
loads are more likely to transmit the virus to a larger number of
people over time than those with high viral loads, according to a
study published Monday in the Proceedings of the National
Academy of Sciences, Reuters reports. Lead researcher
Christophe Fraser of Imperial College London and colleagues examined
several groups of HIV-positive people in Africa, Europe and the U.S.
They also analyzed previously published European and African studies
that examined viral load, infectiousness and mortality.

One-Third of
People With TB in U.S. Unaware of HIV Status
(Kaiser Daily HIV/AIDS
Report) Nearly one-third of people
living with tuberculosis in the U.S. are unaware of their HIV
status, according to a study published Friday in CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly
Report, Reuters reports (Dunham,
Reuters, 10/25). The study examined data from the
National TB Surveillance System from 1993 to 2005
for 49 states and Washington, D.C. According to the study, reporting
of HIV status among people living with TB increased from 35% in 1993
to 68% in 2003 and leveled off during 2004 and 2005 (Marks et al.,
MMWR, 10/26). Nine percent of all people with active TB
in the U.S. tested positive for HIV in 2005.
