Globe and Mail Examines Work of Stephen Lewis in Lesotho

(Kaiser Daily HIV/AIDS Report)      Toronto's Globe and Mail on Monday examined how Stephen Lewis, former United Nations special envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa, "made Lesotho a particular focus of his work" during his five-year tenure (Nolen, Globe and Mail, 9/10). According to UNAIDS and the National AIDS Commission, an estimated 29,000 new HIV cases occurred in Lesotho in 2007, bringing the total number of cases to more than 270,000 (Kaiser Daily HIV/AIDS Report, 7/13).

Calgary council to ponder drug paraphernalia ban

(Colette Derworiz , Calgary Herald, September 07'07)    Calgary city council will consider a proposal Monday to investigate a ban on the sale of crack pipes, roach clips, water bongs and other drug paraphernalia. Ald. Craig Burrows, who sits on the police commission, will urge his council colleagues at Monday's meeting to recommend city bureaucrats look at ways to prohibit the sale of the materials.

Harper's new Anti-Drug Strategy is not anti-HIV

(National Review of Medicinc, September 2007, Vol 4 No. 15)    Injection drug use continues to be a driving factor in the global HIV/AIDS epidemic.  Harm reduction services, including needle exchange programs, have long been identified as essential components of an effective HIV prevention strategy. While scientific consensus has been reached regarding their efficacy in reducing HIV transmission, such interventions remain controversial. In contrast, 'zero tolerance' approaches to drug use have been shown ineffective,5 however, they remain popular among conservative policymakers over evidence-based public health approaches. These should be matters of grave concern as they have a potentially devastating impact on HIV prevention efforts.

FDA, Pfizer Warn of Possible Carcinogen in Antiretroviral Treatment Viracept

(Kaiser Daily HIV/AIDS Report)    Tests have detected a "potential human carcinogen" in batches of Pfizer's antiretroviral drug Viracept, FDA and the pharmaceutical company announced Monday, Reuters reports. Pfizer in a letter to health care professionals said that the chemical ethyl methanesulfonate -- or EMS, which is formed during manufacturing -- has been shown to cause cancer and birth defects in animals but that no data from humans are available (Richwine, Reuters, 9/10).  The company advised health care professionals that children who are stable on antiretroviral regimens containing Viracept can remain on the drug, adding that those who need to initiate therapy should not start regimens with Viracept until further notice.

"Getting me back on track"

The role of outreach interventions in engaging and retaining people living with HIV/AIDS in medical care
Rajabiun, Serena et al.[2007] AIDS Patient Care and STDs. 21(1), S20-S29
This qualitative study explores the underlying attitudes, beliefs, and practices that affect the regular use of HIV care among PLWHA considered to be hard to reach and underserved by the health care system and identifies strategies that encourage engagement and retention in care. The researchers found that outreach program staff were important in helping PLWHA stay in treatment through improving their knowledge about HIV care and treatment, building skills to incorporate HIV into their daily routine, and providing support networks.
