HIV Edmonton Says Goodbye To Summer Students

Amanda Nhan was our SIHA/Community Education summer student at HIV Edmonton. Amanda's last day was August 26th and we were very sad to see her go. Amanda was kind enough to allow us to include her summary of work experience so that we may share it with our listserve members.

Jessica Peck was our Fund Development Summer Student through the National Mentorship Program, in partnership with Molson Canadian. Jessica’s last day was August 28 and she will be missed.  Her work on our bi-annual Casino and in running our first ever raffle was a huge help around the HIV Edmonton office.

The Fund Development Department was lucky enough to have a second summer student, Lindsay Bradbury, to work as our Walk Assistant.  Lindsay’s last day was also August 28 and HIV Edmonton thanks Lindsay for her efforts and hard work in helping to plan the Walk for Life.

Trying To Stop The Syphilis Outbreak In British Columbia

Over the past decade, rates of syphilis have increased dramatically in high-income countries – and Canada is no exception to this trend. Syphilis outbreaks are common and ongoing among men who have sex with men (MSM). In the United States and possibly elsewhere, rates of syphilis among MSM are so high that some researchers refer to it as an epidemic within this community.

Routine Circumcision In Baby Boys To Stem Spread Of HIV Being Considered By US Health Officials

US health officials are considering whether to promote routine circumcision for all baby boys born in the country as a way to reduce the spread of HIV; a topic that is giving rise to considerable debate in anticipation of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's official draft recommendations on the subject that are due out at the end of the year.

HIV Health Problems Cause Few Problems In Employment, But Discrimination Still A Reality In UK

A majority of people with HIV employed in the UK report that HIV has no impact on their working life at present, according to research conducted by City University on behalf of the National AIDS Trust. Although most of those who disclosed their HIV status at work had had a generally positive reaction, stigma and discrimination create more problems at work than ill-health. However, only a minority of people with HIV are fully aware of the provisions of the Disability Discrimination Act.

50 Million Women In Asia At Risk Of HIV From Their Intimate Partners

An estimated 50 million women in Asia are at risk of becoming infected with HIV from their intimate partners. Evidence from many Asian countries indicates that these women are either married or in long-term relationships with men who engage in high-risk sexual behaviours.
