The 1st of December, World AIDS Day, is the day when individuals and organisations from around the world come together to bring attention to the global AIDS epidemic. 2008 marks the 20th anniversary of World AIDS Day. Whilst we have come a long ways since 1988, there is still much more to be done.

Aboriginal people experience a disproportionate burden of HIV infection among the adult population in Canada; however, less is known regarding the prevalence and characteristics of HIV positivity among drug-using and street-involved Aboriginal youth.

Higher Risk of Certain Cancers Being Recorded in HIV-Positive People

Physicians in the U.S. are reporting a higher risk for certain types of cancers -- such as liver, head, neck and lung -- in people living with HIV/AIDS, raising concerns that a cancer epidemic is imminent in the population, the Baltimore Sun reports.

CDC's HIV Testing Recommendations Not Being Followed, Studies Show

Two years after CDC recommended routine HIV testing for people ages 13 to 64, several studies presented at a recent conference indicate that the recommendations generally are not being followed, the Washington Post reports (Brown, Washington Post, 11/21).

Bill To Implant Microchips in 'Sexually Aggressive' HIV-Positive People in Indonesian Province Generates Support, Criticism

An Indonesian bill that includes a bylaw requiring "sexually aggressive" people living with HIV/AIDS to be implanted with microchips is causing debate between some lawmakers, who argue that the bill is necessary to curb the spread of the virus,

South Africa observes World AIDS Day

South Africans held a 15 minute silence today to observe world AIDS day and to remember the victims of the disease. South Africa has the highest number of people with AIDS in the world and 5.5 million South Africans have AIDS or are HIV positive.

Canadians living with HIV/AIDS say strong stigma still exists, more education and better teatments are needed

 

 OTTAWA, Ontario – November 24, 2008 – Twenty-five years after the discovery of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), a large majority of Canadians living with HIV/AIDS still feel stigmatized and there is still a strong need for further and continuing education, outreach and better treatments. These are the key findings of the "HIV+25" survey released today.

CAHR 2009 Conference - Abstract Submission Open

The 2009 CAHR conference will be held from April 23 – 26, 2009 at the Westin Bayshore Hotel in Vancouver, BC.  The theme of this year’s conference is "Facing the Evolving Epidemic" and is meant to capture the challenges in HIV prevention, care and treatment as we move into the next phase of the epidemic.

International Volunteers Day - December 5th

A huge thank you to all of the volunteers that have contributed to HIV Edmonton this year!

 

Newest Additions to HIV Edmonton Staff

We are happy to welcome 3 new staff to HIV Edmonton, each bringing their own unique talents to add to our team of dedicated individuals.

 

Tsion Demeke Abate – Community Education Facilitator

Tsion is the newest staff member at HIV Edmonton and she has a Master’s of Education from the Education Policy Studies department at the University of Alberta. Tsion also worked on the HIV/AIDS field in Ethiopia, East Africa, and hopes to make use of her education and work experience in fighting against HIV/AIDS and its consequences through education.

 

Chi Chung Lau - Support and Outreach Worker

Another new smiling face at HIV Edmonton. Chi is originally from Hong Kong, and has recently relocated to Canada. Chi has been in the field of AIDS work for more than eight years, and has worked closely with minority groups on HIV prevention programs and support services. He strongly believes in community participation, and is very excited to have joined HIV Edmonton to continue with his involvement. 

 

Helen Larson - Executive Assistant/Volunteer Coordinator

Helen comes from a background of 10+ years as a legal assistant in law firms. She decided to make a change in her life and move down a career path that involves giving back to the community and personal growth. She is looking forward to learning as much as she can about HIV/AIDS work and excited to meet and work with volunteers.
