Canadian HIV/AIDS Advocates Call for Increased Efforts From Next Government To Fight HIV/AIDS

(Kaiser Daily HIV/AIDS Report, October 14, 2008)

A coalition of Canadian HIV/AIDS organizations led by the Canadian AIDS Society on Thursday called for the country's next elected government to reinstate social support and other resources for people living with HIV/AIDS, the CP/Yahoo! News reports. The call came after the coalition contacted Canada's five main political parties to ask them about their stances on issues surrounding HIV/AIDS. It also comes in response to reductions in HIV/AIDS funding by the government since 2005, which has resulted in what the Canadian HIV/AIDS Legal Network estimates is an overall funding reduction of 6.57 million Canadian dollars, or about $5.5 million.

HIV-infection Murder Trial Starts

(Canwest News Service, October 21, 2008)

An Ontario man facing first-degree murder charges for allegedly infecting sexual partners with the virus that causes AIDS failed to disclose his health status to partners and, in some cases, "lied" about it, Crown lawyers said in an opening statement at the trial of Johnson Aziga.

The 52-year-old Aziga is the first person in Canada to be prosecuted for murder in an HIV-infection case for allegedly having unprotected sex without telling partners he was HIV positive. Before a jury in Hamilton, he pleaded not guilty to two counts of first-degree murder and 11 counts of aggravated sexual assault.

Globalization and HIV/AIDS Factsheet

The Interagency Coalition on AIDS and Development (ICAD) has created a new factsheet on globalization and how it affects the ability of countries to mount effective and sustainable responses to HIV. It investigates how various dimensions of economic globalization (such as migrant labour, free trade, intellectual property rights, debt, and global financing) act as drivers of social determinants of health in general, and of HIV in particular.  To view the factsheet please visit the ICAD website at http://www.icad-cisd.com

Germs in the news

(CATIE, October 16, 2008)

In an era of increased global trade and connectedness through air travel, transportation networks can inadvertently help carry germs from one region or country to another. This happened in the case of the SARS outbreak in Canada several years ago. Doctors worry that it may also be the case with a future, perhaps highly lethal virus such as a mutant form of influenza.

Obama's Campaign Discusses Candidate's Plans for Addressing HIV/AIDS in U.S.

(Kaiser Daily HIV/AIDS Report, October 20, 2008)

Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama's (Ill.) campaign on Thursday during a conference call discussed the candidate's plans to combat HIV/AIDS in the U.S., the Advocate reports. According to the Advocate, Obama's plans include increasing funding for research, care and prevention and developing a national strategy within the first year of his administration.

Rep. Diana DeGette (D-Colo.) during the conference call said that Obama's health care plan requires insurance companies to cover everyone regardless of health histories or pre-existing conditions, which is "critical to the HIV/AIDS community," she said. "One of the most important differences is going to be leadership on public health issues that are facing America, in particular the ongoing HIV/AIDS epidemic," DeGette said.

Researchers at HIV/AIDS Vaccine Conference Discuss New Methods, Ongoing Trials

(Kaiser Daily HIV/AIDS Report, October 20, 2008)

Researchers at the AIDS Vaccine 2008 conference in Cape Town, South Africa, last week examined how setbacks in developing a vaccine have "forced them to look for entirely new ways of creating a defense against the disease," AFP/Google.com reports. "We are in the middle of quite a profound shift of mindset in the research community," Alan Bernstein, director of the Global HIV Vaccine Enterprise, said at the conference, which ended on Friday. He added that setbacks have made researchers examine new research methods in the effort to develop an HIV/AIDS vaccine (Blandy, AFP/Google.com, 10/18).

Merck in September 2007 announced it had halted a large-scale clinical trial of its experimental HIV vaccine after the drug failed to prevent HIV infection in participants or prove effective in delaying the virus' progression to AIDS. The vaccine candidate also might have put some trial participants at an increased risk of HIV. Following news of the Merck vaccine, trials of NIH's Vaccine Research Center's HIV vaccine candidate were scaled back (Kaiser Daily HIV/AIDS Report, 10/16).

Decreased TB Funding Could Hinder HIV/AIDS Efforts, Researchers Say

(Kaiser Daily HIV/AIDS Report, October 15, 2008)

A decline in global funding to control tuberculosis could compromise gains made in the fight against HIV/AIDS, Francoise Barre-Sinoussi -- recent recipient of the 2008 Nobel Prize in medicine for her contribution to the discovery of HIV -- said Tuesday, the Los Angeles Times reports. Barre-Sinoussi spoke during a teleconference from the Institut Pasteur in Paris about the current global financial crisis.

Global Financial Crisis Puts Success of MDGs At Risk, U.N. Head Says

(Kasier Daily HIV/AIDS Report, October 14, 2008)

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Monday said he is concerned about the effects that the current global financial crisis will have on impoverished nations and efforts to meet the United Nations Millennium Development Goals -- which include targets to curb the spread of diseases like HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria -- AFP/The International News reports. Ban said he is "deeply concerned" about the impact of the financial crisis on the developing world, "particularly on the poorest of the poor and the serious setback this is likely to have on efforts to meet major goals." He also said there is a need to "consider urgent multilateral action to alleviate the impact of recent events on the development agenda" of the United Nations.
