Make Every Step Count

We’ve shown Calgary who’s best in football. But which city has the bigger heart?

Help us raise $120,000 and win the Alberta Throwdown during the 2008 Scotiabank AIDS Walk for Life.

Not yet registered? Sign up today. If you’re walking solo, we challenge you to get 10 pledges of $25 each for a total of $250.

Better yet, why not grab seven co-workers, friends, family members or neighbours and form a team? Raise $250 each for a grand total of $2,000.

Already registered? Here are a few tips to help you pump up your pledge power:

  • Bring your pledge form to the gym, church or other extracurricular activities.
  • Change your voicemail and ask callers for their support.
  • Challenge another team or walker to see who can raise the most.
  • Hold a bake sale, garage sale or other event and pledge the proceeds.

Congratulations Bodymappers!

Volunteers of HIV Edmonton's Peer Support program completed a 4 day bodymapping workshop Sept. 29 - Aug. 1. The participants engaged in self-discovery, art-creation, and group discussions regarding their health, bodies, and experiences. Through this process, they developed bodymaps, which are life-size representations of individuals' experiences of living with HIV/AIDS. The bodymaps will be on display at various galleries and cafes in Edmonton. Check HIV Edmonton's website and listserve for more information.

HIV Edmonton would like to thank our sponsors: Canadian AIDS Treatment Information Exchange (CAITE), The Paint Spot, and Edmonton Community Adult Learning Association (ECALA).

HIV-Positive People Might Be at Increased Risk of Bone Fractures, Study Finds

(Kaiser Daily HIV/AIDS Report, September 2, 2008)

As HIV-positive people live longer primarily because of antiretroviral treatment, they might face an increased risk of bone fractures, researchers from Massachusetts General Hospital reported last week, Xinhua/Individual.com reports. According to the study, the prevalence of bone fractures in people living with HIV is 60% greater compared with HIV-negative people. According to Steven Grinspoon of MGH, the study group included more than 8,500 people living with HIV and more than two million control patients. He added that researchers evaluated data from patients treated over an 11-year period. The size of the study group "has the power to detect significant differences in risk for both men and women at critical sites such as the hip and spine, risks that increased with age," Grinspoon said.

Sexual Activities Other Than Intercourse Carry Risk of HIV, Other STIs, Study Finds

(Kaiser Daily HIV/AIDS Report, September 4, 2008)

Sexual activities other than intercourse carry some risk of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections, according to a report from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists published recently in the journal Obstetrics and Gynecology, Reuters reports. An ACOG expert committee said that although many people engage in "noncoital" sexual activities -- such as oral sex, mutual masturbation and anal sex -- in an attempt to prevent pregnancy and reduce the risk of STIs, these sex acts still come with varying degrees of STI risk, and it is important for people to protect themselves.

Researchers Identify Gene That Could Help Develop HIV/AIDS Vaccine

(Kaiser Daily HIV/AIDS Report, September 8, 2008)

In an article published in the journal Science on Thursday, researchers announced that they have discovered a gene, called Apobec3, that might help in the development of an HIV/AIDS vaccine, Reuters Health reports. According to the researchers, Apobec3 helps mice develop antibodies against a virus that is similar to HIV.

U.N. Report Finds Donors Providing Less Aid to Developing Nations

(Kaiser Daily HIV/AIDS Report, September 5, 2008)

Despite rising food and energy prices and slowing economic growth worldwide, aid to developing nations has been on the decline, according to a United Nations report released on Thursday by U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, the New York Times reports. The report found that aid decreased by 8.4% in 2007, following a 4.7% decrease in 2006 (Macfarquhar, New York Times, 9/4). Aid had increased steadily between 1997 and 2005 (AP/USA Today, 9/4). In addition, although the Group of Eight industrialized nations in 2005 pledged to increase aid to Africa by 2010, only $4 billion has been delivered to the continent, according to the report (New York Times, 9/4).
